Tips for Birding

Although long appreciated as a site for regular Ponderosa Pine species, this area has recently gained recognition as a local hotspot, where a number of unusual migrants have been found. Probably best in migration.

About this Location

There are two main access points to the Elden Springs area. One is off North Saint Moritz and is about a mile and a half from the spring. The other is at the end of Lugano Way. All trails leading to the spring are dirt footpaths leading from paved streets.

To access the spring area quickly (in just a couple of minutes), you would want to access the trail at the end of Lugano Way. To reach Lugano Way from the intersection of I-17 & I-40, go East on I-40. Exit at County Cub, go left, over the expressway. At the first light, go left on Rt. 66. Get in the far right lane. Go 2 lights down and make a right on N. Fanning Drive (there is a Sizzler and Jack-in-the-Box on the corner). Follow Fanning up the hill about .25 mile or so, and make a left on East Linda Vista Drive. Go one short block and make a left on North Fanning Drive (Fanning is split up at this point). Go left on East Matterhorn Drive. Go another .25 mile or so and take a right on Lugano Way. Lugano Way is a short street that ends in a cul-de-sac. Park before the cul-de-sac in front of one of the last couple of houses. The trailhead is at the end of the cul-de-sac, between 2 houses. It is marked. To access the spring, go straight on the main trail. The spring is about a 3-5 minute walk and is next to the old Elden Homestead. From here there are trails that lead off to the left (west) to the canyon area.
