The area is also home to some threatened species, such as American marten and lynx. The area is managed by the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department.
The Ashuelot River runs right through the Keene State College campus, which is at about halfway along the river’s course. Over the river’s sixty-three-mile length, its water quality varies significantly. The Keene State College campus also includes Brickyard Pond, the Arboretum and Gardens, and a Wildlife Management Area along the banks of the Ashuelot River near the College’s athletic field complex, established by the KSC Grounds Crew in cooperation with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service.

Keene State College is a public liberal arts college in Keene. It is part of the University System of New Hampshire and the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges. Founded in 1909 as a teacher’s college (originally, Keene Normal School; later, Keene Teachers College).
The campus covers 170 acres and is adjacent to the Ashuelot River, which flows through the city.
