Birding in Georgia
About Andrews Island Important Bird Area
This is a U.S. Corps of Engineers dredge spoil disposal site. It is surrounded by a +20 ft tall dike with water control sturctures to remove the water after the spoil has settled out. It is adjacent to the waterfront of downtown Brunswick. When dredge contractors deepen the ship channel, the solid material, along with the water, is sucked up from the bottom and pumped into the area.
The site is owned by the state, federal, and municipal governments.
Habitat: Sand and calcium dredge aggregate with grasses and shrubs.
Land Use: Dredge soil disposal site. Entry is limited by the Corps of Engineers, Glynn County, and the Georgia Ports Authority.
