In terms of birding, the best time of year to visit H.O. Cook State Forest is late fall or winter to capitalize on Crossbill and winter finch activity. A strategy for birding this spot is to walk along the dirt roads that go through this forest.
The parking situation at this spot is a bit confusing. Pull off the roadside somewhere where it looks like there is enough space. Beware though, this area is frequently logged so avoid parking somewhere that could cause issues for logging equipment trying to get by. Also, be cautious not to park on a couple of private property parcels as you are entering the forest from State Farm Road.
