About this Location

Prospect Hill Park offers scenic views, hiking trails, and historical monuments. The park covers 252 acres of land and is the highest point in Waltham, with an elevation of 485 feet above sea level. The park was established in 1893 by the city of Waltham, after acquiring the land from several private owners. The park is home to several landmarks, such as the Prospect Hill Tower, a stone observation tower built in 1899 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of George Washington's visit to the area; the Leach Amphitheater, a stone amphitheater built in 1930 that hosts concerts and events; and the Bigelow Monument, a granite obelisk erected in 1868 to honor Major General Timothy Bigelow, a Revolutionary War hero. The park features a playground, a picnic area, and a dog park. The park is open year-round from dawn to dusk and is free of charge. The park is maintained by the Waltham Parks and Recreation Department and the Friends of Prospect Hill Park, a volunteer group that organizes clean-ups, trail maintenance, and educational programs.

This wooded natural park is filled with hiking trails and scenic vistas. A seasonal vehicle access road allows visitors to picnic at one of the many designated picnic sites and/or hike a section deeper into the park.
