About this Location

The Russell Bird Sanctuary is a 60-acre wildlife preserve located in Westford. The sanctuary was established in 1974 by the Russell family, who donated the land to the town for conservation purposes. The sanctuary features trails, ponds, meadows, and wetlands. The sanctuary is open to the public year-round and offers educational programs, guided walks, and volunteer opportunities.

From the Stone Arch Trail, a trail to the Russell Bird Sanctuary is marked. This short, hilly trail loops around a peninsula which juts out into Stony Brook. This is a good place to spy wood ducks, red-winged blackbirds, kingfishers, and a beaver lodge. Along the bird sanctuary trail, there are nesting boxes and benches erected by Eagle Scouts.
