Tips for Birding

The Pontook Dam on the Androscoggin River forms a reservoir and wetland area. During the spring and summer, the early morning and late evening are excellent times to look for moose.

Birds of Interest

The area is a great spot to view American Bald Eagles flourishing in the wild, with several photo opportunities available at the roadside on NH-16.

The wetland provides a nesting area for a variety of birds including American Bitterns, Pied-billed Grebes, Common Loons, Wood Ducks, Hooded Mergansers, and American Black and Ring-necked Ducks. Common Yellowthroats, Olive-sided and Alder Flycatchers, Nashville Warblers, Northern Waterthrushes, and Bay-breasted Warblers are all possibilities.
