Canobie Lake

Canobie Lake

Salem, New Hampshire 03079

Birds of Interest

Gulls frequently either roost here or stage here prior to going to roost on nearby Cobbetts Pond. Glaucous and Iceland Gulls are to be watched for in the colder months. Bald Eagles sometimes stop in to look for scraps left by ice fishermen. During migration, scan the water carefully for loons, grebes, and ducks. Fish Crows probably nest along the eastern shore of the lake around Canobie Lake Park and can sometimes be seen or heard passing by these vantage points. Perhaps of note, during the colder months, Fish Crows can frequently be found along the NH-28 strip to the southeast.

About this Location

Straddling the Windham-Salem border, Canobie Lake can be a good spot for a scan and is close enough to I-93 for a quick stop. Take exit 3 off the highway and head east (right off the ramp) on NH–111. Take a left at the first “T” intersection to stay on NH-111. Follow this for less than half a mile and take a right on Hayes Hart Road. Very soon, you will see a boat launch on your right. Park here and scan the north end of the lake. Alternatively, continue east on NH-111 past Hayes Hart Road and take a right on North Policy Street. Park in the pump station parking lot here and walk out a short trail to the lake edge.
