Established in 1966, Sumner Lake State Park, on the eastern plains of New Mexico, is roughly eight miles northwest of Fort Sumner. The park's centerpiece is the 4,500-acre Sumner Lake, a reservoir created in 1939 by the Sumner Dam on the Pecos River. Visitors to the park can enjoy a variety of recreational activities including wildlife viewing and birding, camping, fishing, boating, swimming, and hiking. The park also offers amenities including showers, restrooms, a playground, and a visitor center with informative exhibits.
The park includes 5 campgrounds and a day-use area. The visitor center is northwest of the dam.
The Fox Run Trail, near the Eastside Campground, meanders 1.7 miles around a reservoir inlet.
