Playas Training and Research Center of New Mexico Tech is in the high desert and receives less than 10 inches of precipitation yearly. There is an abundance of wildlife in the area and within townsite borders. It is not uncommon to see herds of Mule Deer grazing on office grounds or in yards, coyotes checking out garbage cans, or javelina investigating yards. A resident bobcat family coexists with residents, as do quail, rabbits, and an occasional mountain lion.
