About Milton Town Forest

The Milton Town Forest (MTF) is located in the eastern portion of Milton on 492 acres. The forest surrounds Milton Pond, the 24-acre centerpiece of the property. Visitors can explore trails with scenic viewpoints and elevations ranging from 840 to 1200 feet.

The forest has a long history of diverse uses. Settlers began farming the area in the late 18th century and at least 7 foundations can be found on the property. By the middle of the 19th century, much of the land had been cleared for pasture and many of the farmers turned to grazing sheep, providing an economic boom in wool exports. From 1923 to 1993, the pond provided Milton with a source of drinking water. Until 1963, Milton Pond was owned by the Milton Water Corporation and later the Champlain Water District. The Town of Milton purchased the land in 1969. The Selectboard designated the area a Town Forest in 1991. In 2006, the Town purchased the adjacent Bove property, adding 135 acres to the forest, a portion of which is located in the Town of Westford.

Over 50 species of birds have been observed, including chickadees, blue jays, robins, warblers, crows, ravens, hawks, belted kingfishers, owls, grouse, and turkeys.
