As the name suggests, Wiessner Woods is almost entirely forested. There is a small portion of meadow visitors pass through to get from the parking area to the trailhead. The forest is a mature stand of hardwood and softwood trees including hemlock, spruce, white pine, maple, beech, and birch. Several small streams traverse the property creating periods of standing water and seasonally wet trails during spring run-off. The property contains an extensive network of mellow trails including a portion of the Catamount Trail which connects to trails on the adjacent Halvorsen and Edson Hill properties.

Wiessner Woods is open to the public for pedestrian recreational use including hiking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and dog walking. Hunting, mountain biking, and motorized recreation are not permitted.

Meadow Overlook
Enjoy views toward Mount Mansfield that are framed by old stonewalls dating back to the 1800s when Wiessner Woods was a farm. Look for signs of fox, coyote, and other wildlife traveling along the edge of the meadow where there is good cover and food.

Vernal Pool
Woodland salamanders and frogs lay their eggs in these shallow pools in the spring. Pools dry up in the summer. Look for Pink Lady’s Slipper growing nearby.

Spruce-Pine-Hardwood Forest
Some of these pines are almost 100 years old! Birds, snowshoe hare, and other animals hide in the low spruce cover. Look for their tracks in winter. Listen for birdsong in the spring.

Gnome Home
On your way to the Sugarhouse Loop, look carefully for the gnome of Wiessner Woods. Sometimes he’s hiding!
