Marsh Pond Wildlife Management Area guide and mapCavity nesting ducks, such as wood ducks and hooded mergansers, as well as mallards and teal, may nest on Old Marsh Pond. Expect to find other water-loving birds such as great blue and green herons. Birds that like to dwell near water may be seen, including eastern kingbirds, kingfishers, red-winged blackbirds, Baltimore orioles, tree swallows, warbling vireos, snipe, and yellow warblers. Woodcock, ruffed grouse, and wild turkeys may be found in the upland area.
Old Marsh Pond has a dam at its southeastern end that regulates the water level. The pond is surrounded by wetlands and mixed hardwood forests. Old Marsh Pond was formerly known as Eagle Lake and is now part of the Marsh Pond Wildlife Management Area, which is owned and managed by the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department.
Old Marsh Pond (131 acres) is a site for the Vermont LoonWatch annual survey. Birders are encouraged to volunteer as often and whenever they are able. See Join LoonWatch for details.
