Northwood Park Loop

Northwood Park Loop

Rutland, Vermont 05701

Birds of Interest

Woods, a brushy area (worth checking for sparrows in migration) along the Green Mountain Power right-of-way and the small dam (Canada Geese, Mallards, and American Black Ducks are the usual waterfowl although Common Mergansers are sometimes seen) provide a variety of habitats.

Many of Vermont’s year-round residents and summer nesters are found in the park. Hermit Thrush are frequently heard singing as are Eastern Wood-Pewee. Louisiana Warbler, Pine Warbler, Black-throated Green Warbler, Chestnut-sided Warbler, and Common Yellowthroat all nest in the park while other warbler species pass through during migration.

About this Location

Northwood Park is located in Rutland Town on Post Road Extension. Post Road Extension can be reached from the intersection of Post Road and US-7 north of Rutland City or from the intersection of Park Lane and US-4 in Mendon (Park Lane will run into Post Road Extension).

The town park includes ball fields, tennis and basketball courts, a swimming pool, a disc golf course, a transfer station, and a town maintenance garage. A walking trail runs through the back of the park accessing part of the Green Mountain Power right-of-way and a small dam. The trail runs between 2 miles and 2.5 miles depending on where you park.

Parking can be found in three places: the small lot next to the basketball/tennis courts (walk the road between the transfer station and pool to the back of the park), a small field with an information kiosk next to the transfer station; and the back of the park (drive the road between the transfer station on the right and the pool on the left).

Except for a couple of small hills, the terrain is mostly level making it suitable for young families. Dog walking is permitted, but dogs must be leashed.

Bird information signs created by Rutland County Audubon are stationed along the trail highlighting some of the bird species found here.
