Gateway Park is located near the western “gateway” to Montpelier on Route 2 and is right on the Winooski River underneath Interstate 89. Most of the land for Gateway Park was originally purchased by the State of Vermont in preparation for the construction of Interstate 89. A portion of this land, where the parking area is located, is owned by Green Mount Cemetery.

This area had long been a vacant lot until a State of Vermont Transportation Enhancement Grant was awarded in 1997, enabling the park’s construction. Green Mount Cemetery Staff directed this grant and, in conjunction with a private contractor, constructed the park along with a canoe launch in 2000, making it one of the few publicly accessible places to launch a canoe in Montpelier. Green Mount Cemetery Commission has agreed to maintain this area for the State of Vermont.
