Birds of Interest

The blue-winged warbler breeds in scrubby grasslands where it can conceal its nest in a low bush or on the ground.

About this Location

The Vermont Land Trust acquired a property in West Brattleboro open to the public for birding. The McCulloch property, also known as Whetstone Woods, is located on Meadowbrook Road. Situated on the edge of Brattleboro, this property is home to four types of forests, a brook, two vernal pools, and two wetlands.

The wooded trails are a natural choice for walkers, snowshoers, and birders. But the land also serves as a learning destination. Research and hands-on trials help discover ways to improve songbird habitats, manage invasive species, and support healthy forests.

From the intersection of I-91 and Route 9 take Route 9 west past the old Seven-Eleven. Turn right on Meadowbrook. The driveway is the second on the right after you cross the brook, but it has not been plowed in winter. Once the snow is gone, pull all the way to the end of the driveway so as not to block the neighbor's access.

The Vermont Land Trust has secured grant funding to make some habitat improvements for wildlife at this property. They are interested in monitoring what birds are using the space before, during, and after the work is completed.
