Tips for Birding

If you carefully keep your bird records by state, be aware of the location of the state line and use the appropriate eBird hotspots when you submit checklists. The Vermont-New Hampshire state line is in the Connecticut River.

Foley Park is in Norwich just across the Ledyard Bridge from Hanover. There are two nearby parking lots available to the public on weekends. There is a walkway under the bridge. This site includes the railroad tracks that run south from the park and the area around the parking lots. Coming back to your car along the tracks makes a nice loop.

About this Location

The Ledyard Bridge the Connecticut River to connect Norwich, Vermont, and Hanover, New Hampshire. It is named after John Ledyard, a famous adventurer and explorer who studied at Dartmouth College. The current bridge was built between 1998 and 2000 and has a pair of concrete ornaments called "bridge balls" at each end. The bridge carries the designation of NH-10A and VT-10A and also serves as a crossing for the Appalachian Trail. The Ledyard Bridge is the third bridge at this location, following two previous covered bridges that were built in 1859 and 1933 respectively. The first Ledyard Bridge was the first free bridge across the Connecticut River and had a covered walkway added later. The second Ledyard Bridge was destroyed by fire in 1975.
